dc.description.abstract1The “black house” in “Las Hortensias,” a short story by Felisberto Hernández, stands as a central semiosphere (Lotman), a semiotic space where reality and fi ction dissolve. Surrounded by other spheres such as the neighbors (who allosemiotically interpret what happens inside) and the factory (whose constant noise permeates its boundaries), the house contains multiple scenes or displays laden with meaning. Among these spaces, the bedroom stands out, conceived as a ritual space of preparation and isolation for Horacio, where the boundaries between wakefulness/dream and reality/fi ction blur; and the large hall containing three glass display cases. These display cases function as theaters of fiction and as semiotic spheres that change meaning, thanks to the caretakers or according to Horacio’s requests. Here we find scenes such as: “The Poisoned Woman,” “The Lighthouse Woman,” “Carnival,” and “The Sponge Lady.” Each display case constitutes a symbolic microcosm with its own laws, where the dolls come to life through Horacio’s gaze. Every space in the “black house” is laden with multiple meanings—not only the bedroom and the display cases, but also the dining room where Horacio shares meals with María, and the sitting room, that space near the main hall where he fi nishes preparing to enter the spectacle of the sceneses_VE
